"She didn't know it could'nt be done so she went ahead and did it anyway."
The above quote, credited to 'Mary's Almanac' pretty much sums up Patricia's approach to life and creativity. She considers herself to be an image maker and whatever visual media it takes to make the image or tell the story is the one she is most likely to use.
Born and raised in South Africa, she was educated under a strict British school system where she showed great promise in art class. She studied classical ballet from the age of eight until her late teens when she started dancing professionally. However, she always carried a camera to the rehearsal studios and opera house and photographed the dancers in class, rehearsals and in performance.
Patricia credits dance and theater with providing an early training in theatrical lighting (which she considers useful for her present incarnation as an image maker). Dancers are, of course, spectacularly graceful creatures who were more than happy to pose for her. Some of them were represented by modelling agents who liked the images they saw. They started calling on her to photograph their young models and so the wheels were set in motion for her future.
Claiming a need for 'creative re-potting' she emigrated to America in 1992 after a successful run as an award winning commercial/advertising photographer in South Africa. She continued in the commercial field of advertising but took a hiatus from the demands of shooting for someone else's vision in order to work on some personal projects. The strongest and most complete of these is a huge portfolio of photographs and essays about American firefighters.
She has been exhibited in both South Africa and America (Manhattan) and has had television 'magazine shows' highlight her abilities. She has also been written about in periodicals.
She is comfortable working both in studio and on location and is well known for her good nature, sense of humor and problem solving abilities. Los Angeles is considered 'home' where her actor/producer husband has encouraged her to consider writing and directing her first independent film. "Although that's in the future. A huge challenge and already a humbling experience."
No matter what the medium, she is hungry to do beautiful work. She loves to make people look good.
"It's all in the eyes and drawing the best out of people by believing in them."
"Journey well". |
